DISCLAIMER:  I am not paid for this, just my hope to bring some clarity, so you can eval for yourself what works for you.  Rather than rehashing the knowns on Operating Systems and irrespective of your position on "age verification" —  lets just get to the point.

Operating Systems:   look  before  you  leap  …

• Windows is now an AI_frontend (not your PC) — just search and you will find what that means to you — and especially focus on Windows Recall

• Apple ... though it is a *nix-variant ... my parents taught me not to play with my food.

• Linux is essential to being free of BigTech ... you should be aware that BigLinux  (e.g., Cannonical, RedHat, SUSE)  is moving in directions like BigTech.
  not wasting time rehashing  Debian & its derivative Ubuntu (by Cannonical),   Fedora & its derivative RHEL (by RedHat), openSUSE (by SUSE)

• Unix  & C … the gold standard ...

Linux - oversimplified 2 camps, 

1. •  BigLinux  the systemd + wayland — the BigLinux, this is "vNext, Now"  though it lags in feature parity even with what it is trying to replace X11

   •  non_BigLinux  the non-systemd + XLibre — the Linux folks are making sure XLibre (a fork of X11) continues to be viable for those seeking stability & practicality 

NOTE:  

• • • there are a lot of distros and not getting into them rather just to the point

    • do NOT shoot the messenger, this is just what I have gathered (I could be waaaay off) and sharing to help (per Disclaimer in the footer :-)

1. non_BigLinux:  the non-systemd + XLibre:    Lunduke Computer OS   ... speaks for itself  ... wonder why?
   is built on Devuan.org   ( nosystemd.org   +   X11Libre )

   • • No Age or ID Verification

     • No Online Accounts Needed.

     • No AI.

     • No Weird Politics.

     • No Forced Rust Clones.

     • Modern Tech. 90s UI  --- you do not like it you can always change the UI

3.   BigLinux:   the systemd + wayland ... the opposite of non_BigLinux seems to be lock-step with windows & apple ... there are many, and here are 3 that offer 

   •  Tails runs of an USB, is in a class of its own, everytime you reboot, it is a fresh/new system, it does have a way to save files.

IF you choose to use persistence to be able to save/store across reboots,  tread carefully

How-to :   instead of burning to USB, look into ventoy so you can just download any Linux distro & try it out or install it. ... start with Tails :-)
